Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, families spent time together after dinner listening to the radio, going for a walk, reading, watching variety shows (Lawrence Welk anyone?), playing board games… Something. Together. As a family.
Now… it seems as though there are more personal electronic devises than there are people in the house and everyone is on at least two of them at a time. Everyone has specific apps they default to and everyone has interest in very different types of things. The world has evolved into personalizing our experiences so much, that it’s getting difficult to enjoy a shared experience. (For example, my 11-year old is watching a dystopian future movie about an overpopulated world… on… YouTube (!?) called The Thinning with popular YouTuber Paul Logan. He’s excitedly sharing the plot summary with me and it totally sounds like a movie I would want to see. But. I. Would. Have. Never. Known. It. Existed!)
This afternoon, in a very flukey way, the four of us ended up at Snakes and Lattes, playing Pandemic. What a board game! So collaborative (not competitive) and super strategic. The boys proved that they were smarter than their parents… and we saved the world together!
Bill and I (he aloud, me privately in my head) had initially worried that it would be too complicated for the boys. We read through the instructions, scratched our heads, and requested the Game Guru Guy, who explained everything to us in detail. Bill still had a puzzled look in his face, while I had a mild case of self-doubt… We were very pleasantly surprised by how capable of collaboratively problem solving our kids are. If there were a test for teamwork, I think we might have scored in reverse order of our ages! I was really impressed.
A wonderful grey, cold, wet Saturday afternoon playing a fabulous new board game. I highly recommend it to any family who likes playing board games, especially skills-based ones.
